註釋
The main argument of this thesis is that women's experiences with endometriosis can only be adequately understood through reference to broader socio-cultural factors; specifically, the cultural context within which those experiences are situated. The cultural context of endometriosis includes: the continuing legacy of historical theories about the condition; contemporary theories about the disease; its aetiology and management; the contemporary political context of neoliberalism within which health is expected to be managed as a private concern; the self-help movement, which has a symbiotic relationship with the neoliberal rationality; and the overarching dynamic of class, gender and power relations. I argue that women experience endometriosis as a largely private problem, a problem they are responsible for managing, or even overcoming. In addition, women experience endometriosis as a condition they might be responsible for having 'caused' or to which they may have contributed. Their experiences of the disease are profoundly embedded in social and cultural practices. The research shows that women who have endometriosis are governed subjects - governed by and through medicine, as well as through the discourses of self-help - and that they are also self-governing subjects. The study contributes to the existing academic literature in providing an understanding of the illness journeys of women with endometriosis and through informing our understanding of the processes of responsibilisation and governance."--Abstract, leaf iii.
