註釋Mary Garden made her operatic debut singing the title role in Charpentiers "Louise" at the Paris Opera in 1900. She was an immediate success. The operatic heroines she portrayed and is remembered for range from the decadent and sensual (Salome, Sappho, Thais) to the spiritual and pure of heart (Marguerite and Melisande). Her autobiography recalls her struggle to obtain a musical education, her familys lack of understanding her career choice, her determination and efforts to study in other countries, and finally, her debut. Throughout her career, Mary Garden attracted the attention of the news media. She created the role of Melisande in the musically historical premiere performance of the Debussy opera, "Pelleas and Melisande." e introduced the then avant garde music of Strauss, Debussy, and Prokofiev to the American public, and often stunned audiences with her frank, sensual portrayals. Mary Garden's life is a success story which she tells with honesty and a lack of pretention.
