註釋Overview of current trends and activities in northern Canada, defined as the Yukon and Northwest Territories (NWT), the waters of Hudson and James Bays and the Arctic archipelago. This review covers the geography and history of the area, its political development and relations with the aboriginal population, and the social and cultural climate. Scientific research being conducted, by both Canadian and international sources, is described, along with the importance of the oil, gas and mining sectors to the economy. The review stresses the importance of protecting the northern environment and ensuring security. Methods of transportation via the ocean and the air are emphasized, as well as the importance of communications. The review concludes with the security agreements reached with the U.S. on the use of the waters of the Arctic, and the measures Canada has taken to strengthen its presence in the area. Descriptions are also given of cooperative scientific research undertaken with the Soviet Union and other polar nations.
