A Book of Saints
註釋Out of the thousands of saints in the calendar of Christendom, the author has made a selection of the most important, the most famous or the most interesting, and the entries are portrayed by artists from the early Middle Ages to modern times. Unusually, they are arranged chronologically, so that in the course of concise, but vivid biographies, the reader can follow the unfolding history of the Church from the apostles and the early martyrs to the missionaries who took the gospel to the ends of the earth. But the book also offers a fascinating view of the way in which artists have approached a subject that was for long a favourite, and at times almost the only one permitted.
