註釋A central goal of ecology is to understand the factors determining species' distributions at a range of spatial scales. While considerable progress has been made towards this aim, we still have a limited grasp of the determinants of species' range limits. Elucidating which factors are responsible is essential for predicting how species' ranges will be altered by global change. Furthermore, changes in individual performance across a species' range affect the best management practices. Thus, while studies conducted at individual sites provide valuable data, such work must be coupled with large-scale research designed at revealing the mechanisms structuring species' ranges. I investigated the role of dispersal in determining the geographic extent of species' distributions. I also examined large-scale patterns of, and underlying mechanisms driving, reproductive output for a suite of marine invertebrates.
