Hugh, a history don at Oxford, Edward, a professional cellist, and Marna, Edward's wife, have set up an apparently amicable menage a trois. All three commute between Edward's house in London and Hugh's in Oxford, but Edward has exclusive rights to Marna in London, while she is all Hugh's in Oxford. They are in London when a new neighbour, Otto Neumann, moves into the house across the road. Otto, it turns out, has played a crucial role in the emotional life of both Edward and Hugh, and the impact he makes on the trio means that things can never be the same again.
