Nearly half a century ago Walter Benjamin wrote: "Subtle distinctions have been pointlessly made in the effort to decide whether or not photography is an art. What was not asked first of all is whether this very invention has not transformed the general character of art." Today it seems more necessary than ever to show the extent to which photography, as a creative medium, has indeed reshaped the conception and practice of art. That is what this book sets out to do.
