In May 1987 a bill was signed into law by the President of the United States declaring the Santa Fe Trail a component of America's National Historic Trail system. This initiated a massive mile-by-mile study by the National Park Service. The author was asked to be a part of that exploration team and to issue a portfolio of maps of the Santa Fe Trail.
