註釋
A native of Cheraw, S.C., Gillespie "Lep" Godfrey Boyd (1909-1988) worked in the 1930s as an engineer for the Atlantic Coastal Lumber Company, Civil Works Administration, South Carolina Highway Department, and United States Coastal and Geodetic Survey. In 1940, Boyd and the other men of the Georgetown Naval Reserve Fourth Fleet Division were called up for active duty. During the war, he served on the oiler USS Guadalupe (AO-32) and as commanding officer of the the USS Chikaskia (AO-54) and USS Nemasket (AOG-10). In 1969, he retired from the United States Navy, having earned the rank of captain. Narrative draws extensively from Boyd's letters to his wife, Geraldine "Gerry" Price Boyd, and ships' logs.
