This paper develops a general differentiable equivalent optimization formulation for the variational inequality problem and analyses its properties. Descent methods are proposed for its solution and convergence proofs are given even in the case where the Jacobian is the only positive semidefinite on the feasible set. The resulting algorithms are adapted for the network equilibrium problem in the space of path flows.
