註釋
Otherwise than Seeing investigates the project of developing an "ethical" paradigm with respect to visual art practice. Working within a constellation of concerns articulated in the work of Emmanuel Levinas, this thesis examines the ethical terms of a visual poetics with the aim of understanding how the structure and structuring effects of a visual text might encourage ethical viewing relations. Through a concern with a Levinasian "relation to other," I explore ethical "viewing" as an embodied practice that necessarily exceeds and escapes the visual closure imposed by the logic of a primarily scopic perception. Seeking a means of structurally intervening in that logic of scopic perception that makes the "prior knowledge" of the viewer the basis of viewing relations, this thesis focuses on the relationship between vision and the desire to "know." Within this concern for the viewing relation, this project calls not for the traditional ethical "representation of other," but rather, for the ethical "representation of the relation to other."
