Creating an art community
註釋This book explores the main themes in the visual art of Wales during the last fifty years of the 20th Century, by reference to its largest community of artists. The Welsh Group - known originally as The South Wales Group - was established in 1948-9, and has since attracted 750 artists members or exhibitors, including leading professional artists, college lecturers, and the grass roots of local art societies. Artists connected with the Group include Ceri Richards, Sir Cedric Morris, Brenda Chamberlain, Ivor Davies, John Elwyn, Arthur Giardelli, Alfred Janes, Sally Moore, Peter Prendergast, Sir Kyffin Williams and Ernest Zobole, as well as less well-known contributors to artistic life in Wales. The History of The Welsh Group provides a window on the diversity and development of art in Wales since the War and explains the common influences and artistic connections of the period. The battles between international movements such as Modernism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop Art, and the awakening of themes of Welsh identity, are apparent in alliances, enmities and influences as a community of artists was created.
