ESTABLISHING A SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM FOR SUICIDE ATTEMPTS AND SELF-HARM: A REGIONAL PILOT-PROJECT IN PORTUGAL
註釋Objective:This presentation aims to discuss the importance of surveillance systems for suicide attempts and self-harm and the pilot project currently being conducted at regional level in Alentejo, PortugalBackground:Collecting data on suicides and suicide attempts is a key area for developing suicide prevention strategies. Because previous suicide attempts are an important risk factor for further attempts and death by suicide, epidemiologic surveillance systems should be implemented by governments regardless of the level progress in implementing suicide prevention activities.At the moment, there is no systematic registry for suicide attempts or self-harm in Portugal.Materials and Methods:Our study focus on systematic registry of Emergency Service visits for suicide attempt and self-harm in four Portuguese hospitals. The study protocol was designed considering the Practice manual for establishing and maintaining surveillance systems for suicide attempts and self-harm published by the World Health Organization in 2016, with the indispensable changes to match the available resources in our settings. The need for stakeholder engagement, funding and staffing, data collection, collation and analysis were taken into account.Discussion:A study protocol was developed taking into account the Practice manual for establishing and maintaining surveillance systems for suicide attempts and self-harm published by the World Health Organization in 2016, with the indispensable changes to match the available resources in our settings, considering the need for stakeholder engagement, funding and staffing, data collection, collation and analysis.
