This is a revised version of the original 1982 edition. The numerous examples taken from literature and the press have been updated and a major appendix added on the development of research in this area since the 80s. The phraseological examples are discussed in terms of their distinguishing formal and semantic characteristics and described from a semasiological and onomasiological perspective. The specific potential ways in which they figure in sentences and texts are also discussed. Special reference is made to the relation between phraseology and word formation in the formation of designations and to phraseological and dephrasiological derivation.
