The Essence of Music
註釋The present volume is made up of Busoni's most important critical works dealing with many aspects of music. Grouped together according to subject matter, these essays, reviews, open letters and notes cover such topics as technical devices of the New Music, experimental techniques, innovations in harmony, new concepts of orchestration, the nature of the interval, new tonalities, and similar topics; estimations, interpretations and technical comments on major musicians of the past, like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, etc.; critical evaluation of his contemporaries, like Debussy, Richard Strauss, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, etc.; and practical advice to pianists and other instrumentalists. One very important section of the book is devoted to his own work, with comments on his operas "Arlecchino" and "Doktor Faust"; and in these papers Busoni is deeply concerned with the ultimate raison d'etre for opera.
