The authors contend that successful, accountable principals need to be able to take account of the past and the present while looking to the future. Most crucial is the principal's ability to learn from history, to know what they stand for, to be able to monitor their own system constantly, and to accept as well as reject new practices and new products in response to good evaluative and accountability evidence. Successful principals need to work smarter not harder.
