註釋
This thesis explores how narratology can be applied to video game theory, especially regarding adventure video games. A specific analysis is carried out on Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle. First, a history of storytelling in video games is presented, focusing on the significance of adventure games as the first genre to rely heavily on story. Then the conflict between two opposing schools of thought is examined - the so called "narratology vs. ludology" debates. Each approaches video game theory from different perspectives, one relying on "narratology", the other on "ludology". The main focus is not on this conflict, but rather on narratology. The second part explores a specific adventure video game titled Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle, the 1993 classic that remains one of the greatest examples of this story-driven genre. Several concepts of narratology are tested against this new medium - including those of the narrator and focalization, time, set, space and events - with special attention paid to interactivity and narrative linearity in adventure games. Wherever basic narratology proves to be insufficient or inefficient, modern video game theory is brought in to support the analysis, since many traditional concepts need to be reformed and adapted to this relatively new medium. The main goal of this analysis is to discover exactly to what degree narratology can be applied to adventure video games and what parts of this tried and true approach need to be modernized in order to fit this different storytelling medium.
