註釋First edition of a critical essay, attributed to the Italian writer and diplomat, Bartolomeo Cavalcanti, on Sperone Speroni's tragedy, Canace, which forms the second part of the volume. Sperone's tragedy was notable only for its innovations: choice of a mythological subject; mixing of seven- and eleven-syllable lines; and extensive use of what aristotle calls "peripeteia"--change by which an action intended to produce a certain effect produces the opposite effect; see E.H. Wilkins, A history of Italian literature, p. 254.
