Lady in the Shadows
註釋Julie Drouet is a name scarcely known to English language readers. Yet she deserves her special place in French literature as one of the most prolific letter-writers in history, and the inspiration for some of the world's most beautiful love poems. Her contributions are attributed to the fact that, for fifty years, she was the mistress and companion of Victor Hugo, France's greatest writer during the nineteenth century. More than simply his muse, Drouet is responsible for having saved his life on several occasions. Their passion for each other was a well-spring from which Hugo drew the inspiration for some of his most profound works. This book is based on Julie's writings and the works of Victor Hugo. It provides a unique view of her life, and an unusual perspective on the life and character of Victor Hugo.
