Assimilation Through Alienation
註釋In short, this dissertation is about alienation, about Mexican Americans writing about detachment from U.S. America as a place of fulfillment. It is also about assimilation through alienation, about assimilated Mexican Americans searching in vain for a place of fulfillment on the American landscape. I argue that alienated Mexican Americans in America are among the assimilated, that alienation and assimilation--in terms of the U.S. American literary landscape-are synonymous. I believe that the characters portrayed in the writing of Anaya, Villarreal, Rios, and Rodriguez exemplify key themes of alienation from Mexican and American culture while, paradoxically, exemplifying an assimilation with U.S. American culture.
