註釋
Discusses the dramas of Kornfeld (1889-1942), a Prague Jew whose writing career was spent mostly in Germany. In 1933 he returned to Prague, but later failed to make use of opportunities to emigrate and died in the Łódź ghetto. Pp. 595-642 deal with his last play, "Jud Süss", written in the late 1920s and first performed in 1930. Contrasts it with Feuchtwanger's play and novel. Feuchtwanger's Süss is demonic, recalling antisemitic stereotypes. Kornfeld's hero sins in denying his deeper, Jewish self and becoming assimilated to the hedonistic life of the court; thus he loses his inner power and falls victim to court intrigues and the antisemitism of the mob. Argues that what sounds today like a warning to the assimilated Jews of Europe was not understood by the author himself. Pp. 685-687 discuss Kornfeld's satire "Die Geheimkonferenz" (spring 1930), which portrays the Nazi racial program as an absurd fantasy.
