This is the 9th EC report on the competitiveness of European industry and it focuses on three of the four priorities of the reform agenda put forward at the 2006 Spring European Council: knowledge and innovation; unlocking business potential; and an efficient and integrated energy policy. It also examines the competitive position of two high technology industrial sectors in Europe, relating to information and communication technology (ICT) goods and services; and the pharmaceutical industry. The report includes chapters on recent developments in growth, productivity and employment in Europe; the liberalisation of European energy markets; the regulatory environment in the context of the Strategy for Growth and Jobs; the financing of innovation; the concept of 'lead markets' in innovation policy; and a statistical annex with indicators of competitiveness at sectoral level.
