The volumes contain names, arranged alphabetically, that were taken by Gay from manuscripts and printed sources; sources for towns and villages in New England, alphabetically arranged by town; historical subject sources, arranged alphabetically by topic; historical notes on Farmington history, Farmington men's names found in printed books, houses in Farmington; vital records from the Connecticut Courant, 1764-1841, arranged by last name; a scrapbook with clippings on articles on the early history of New Britain Society, articles on the preservation of records, historical articles on Farmington, Barkhamsted and Unionville, and obituaries; and one collection of genealogical correspondence, 1880-1891, with letters from such individuals as Lucius M. Boltwood, Franklin B. Dexter, George E. Hoadley, D. Williams Patterson, Frank F. Starr, Mary Kay Talcott, Strong Wadsworth and William H. Webster.
