註釋
Traces Bonhoeffer's opposition to the Nazi persecution of Jews and compares it with the position of other leaders of the Confessing Church and resistance activists. In 1933 he responded to the first anti-Jewish measures by writing about the continuing centrality of Israel in salvation history. Describes the dispute in the Confessing Church over the "Aryan paragraph", which Bonhoeffer saw as a violation of the Confession. He also brought the facts of Nazi persecution of the Jews to the attention of ecumenical conferences. Surveys activities of Church bodies on behalf of non-Aryans. The resistance generally failed to act against persecution of Jews. Notes that Goerdeler, sometimes accused of antisemitism, protected Jews and alerted foreign contacts to their plight; Moltke also rescued Jews. In 1940 Bonhoeffer entered the Abwehr (Intelligence Service), a stronghold of the resistance within the army; he joined his brother-in-law, Hans von Dohnanyi, in assisting Jews and transmitting information on the Holocaust to international organizations. Both men were imprisoned for these activities in 1943 and executed by the Nazis in 1945 in connection with the July 1944 coup attempt.
