Frantisek Palacky (1798-1876)
註釋The biography of the leading Czech historian and political thinker of the 19th century, Frantiek Palack, is based upon a thorough analysis of his complete published work and his papers in Czech, Austrian and German archives. Palack was one of the influential European historians of the 19th century who wrote their compendious books for educational purposes. He is, above all, the founder of the Czech vision of history that is effective until our days, because he characterized the Czechs as a constituent part of the European community of nations in the past who should also take a respectable place among the European nations in the future. Small nations that were not able to keep their full independence as states seemed for Palack to be a natural counterbalance to the process of unification and equalization of the modern world going on. He appreciated the historical competition between Catholicism and Protestantism, while standing for tolerance towards all Christian confessions. His view exceeded the chronological limits of the 19th century. Since Palack started to write his main works in German, he secured an international recognition for them. At the same time, Palack was an Austria-minded Czech, a defender of the Austrian multinational monarchy, and a supporter of a federalized order in Central Europe. He was an active organizer of scholarly life in Bohemia, and he also took part in the activities of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Vienna.
