註釋In this book J.D. Legge, Professor of History at Monash University, places the problems of the modern republic in the framework of the longer history of the islands, noticing the way in which indigenous patterns have absorbed, over the centuries, a variety of external influences -- from India, China, the Middle East and Europe. He emphasises the way in which traditional rivalries are reflected in contemporary conflicts but he also notices the rapidity of social change in modern Indonesia.
