The essay is entitled "The Robber Baron Archaeologist." Gordon's essay is a well-researched and documented life of the financier and Egyptologist, Theodore M. Davis (1838-1915). The early life, business dealings, and personal life of Davis are described as well as the many expeditions he financed and arranged to the Valley of the Kings, Egypt, 1903-1909. Antiquities, paintings, and other art objects collected by Davis and his team of archaeologists later formed part of the Egyptian holdings of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
