Ivan Fedorovich Shponka and his Aunt
註釋This is a new translation from the earliest existant Russian manuscript of Gogol's classic "Ivan Fedorovich Shponka and his Aunt". This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Gogol's life and works and an Index of Gogol's individual works. A comical portrayal of a young man's life in the countryside and his interactions with his eccentric aunt. “Ivan Fedorovich Shponka and his aunt” is an unfinished story by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol, although such incompleteness was already considered by the author’s contemporaries to be a conscious artistic device. First published in 1832 in the second book of Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka. “Ivan Fedorovich Shponka and His Aunt” is a realistic work, already in many ways close to Gogol’s mature works, and therefore stands out significantly from the other stories of “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka.” This history allows us to believe that it could have been written later than the entire cycle of Ukrainian stories.
