Safety and Health Teambuilding
註釋Although often incorrectly described as being inherently dangerous, the construction industry is unique in that it is characterised by several unique features which include separation of the design from the actual construction, reliance on the consistency of natural phenomena such as weather conditions, poorly skilled workforce, and divergent stakeholder goals, expertise and skills. Additionally, interdependence is required between many stakeholders such as clients, designers, construction managers and workers, which contribute to the construction process. Given the unique nature of the industry and the interdependence of the large number of stakeholders, teamwork is crucial to achieve safety and health on construction projects. Teamwork has been described as the ability to work together toward a common vision and the ability to direct people to attain uncommon results. Since safety is everybody's business requiring the commitment and involvement of every stakeholder in achieving this common vision, teambuilding can effectively ensure that everyone can and will work together. The process of teambuilding also requires the facilitation of certain strategies, systems and processes. Included among these is constructibility management, design-build, partnering, quality management systems and safe work procedures. This paper discusses how team building and the development of a teamwork ethic can contribute to the achievement of zero accidents and incidents on construction projects. In particular the roles and contributions of stakeholders as well as several strategies, systems and precesses are investigated. The results of interviews conducted with stakeholders are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of teambuilding, teambased structures and teamwork in achieving adequate safety and health performance on construction projects.
