Biotechnology in the Pulp and Paper Industry
註釋This report was commissioned as a discussion paper for the National Biotechnology Advisory Committee. It reviews and critically evaluates progress in biotechnology as applied to the pulp and paper industry since 1984 to initiate action in Canada to assist industry in implementing those biotechnologies which look most promising. The first section of the report highlights the most recent advances in biotechnology, divided into those already applied on an industrial scale (wastewater treatment, mill-scale bleaching trials with xylanase, and mill-scale trials on dewatering in papermaking), those under development (biological bleaching, biomechanical pulping, enzymatic pitch control), and fundamental research (lignin biodegradation, molecular mechanism of cellulase action). The second section of the report analyses factors which have contributed to the success or failure of biotechnologies since 1984 and compares pure and applied research in those countries considered to be important in the field, such as Canada, Finland, Japan, Sweden and the United States.
