註釋
Walter De Streverlying (b.1130) was the common ancestor of the Sterlings of Kier. He was the father of three sons, including Sir Alexander De Streverlying (b.1160). By the fifth generation, the family had changed its name to Stirling, which they used until 1600 when part of the family left Kier, Scotland and moved to Herfordshire, England. At that time, the Herfordshire branch of the family changed the spelling to Sterling. In 1652, Sir John Sterling of Herfordshire was the first to emigrate to America. He was followed by at least three other members of the Sterling branch came to New England in the 1600s. Descendants settled in New York and Ohio as well as other parts of the United States.
