The Way of a Man With a Maid is a Biblical evaluation of the courtship and betrothal movements currently gaining popularity within the evangelical Christian community. While sympathetic with many of the concerns of the courtship movement, Phillips raises questions about certain ideas with which it is often associated. Phillips devotes considerable attention to refuting Jonathan Lindvall’s teaching on ‘betrothal’ - a teaching which asserts that young people must allow their parents full control in the decision whom to marry. Phillips argues that this leads to an approach to relationships that centers around man-made techniques rather than scriptural principles.While avoiding the pitfalls of both modern recreational dating and legalistic formulas, Phillips' work offers an approach to pre-marital relationships that is both scripturally robust and practically workable.
