Structural Evaluation of Long Boron Composite Columns
註釋Boron filament-epoxy composite tubes were evaluated for use as long column members in a spacecraft. Struts, 8 ft long and 3.2 in. in diameter, were designed, fabricated, and tested. After evaluation of test results, three-ply and four-ply laminates were selected to satisfy design load requirements of 5000 and 7000 lb., respectively. These designs were 33 and 45 percent lighter than 6061-T6 aluminum tubes with the same column design load. Effects of eccentricities were considered for column design as well as theoretical Euler buckling and local crippling failure loads.
