Scrapbook
註釋A scrapbook, based on Rudolph Ackermann's system, I am a Scrapbook ... (London : R. Ackermann, 1829), containing approximately 330 illustrations dating between 1779 and 1834, assembled by a Mrs. Johnson beginning Sept. 1, 1829. The volume contains various sizes of hand-colored plates and cutouts (32), folio-sized hand-colored political cartoons (7), hand-colored fashion plates and cutouts (80), original sketches and drawings (17), manuscript poetry (some possibly original), engraved views of English cottages, castles, and landscapes; engraved portraits; original watercolors (10), 18th century printed rebuses (4), a printed broadside, and silhouettes by Augustin Edouart (5). The Ackermann title page at the begining of the volume is a masterpiece of engraving and printing. Items in the scrapbook are mounted on varicolored sheets of paper, laid out and arranged by Mrs. Johnson, who has drawn frames or borders around the images. Included are: 7 political cartoons, 4 by "A Sharpshooter" (John Phillips), one each by "Paul Pry" (William Heath) and Charles Jameson Grant, and one anonymous (four of which are not in the British Museum Catalogue of political and personal satires); 2 leaves of an 18th century rebus, The Tunbridge love letter, and, The Lady's answer to the Tunbridge love letter (British Museum Cat. 8593); An Hieroglyphic epistle from the devil to Lord North. June 23, 1779 (BM Cat. 5542, and An Hieroglyphic epistle from Lord North to the devil in answer to that from pandemonium, July 9, 1779 (BM Cat. 5543); 5 silhouettes by Augustin Edouart of well-dressed women (one presumably being Mrs. Johnson); a broadside, Description of the celebrated miller's tomb on Highdown Hill, near Worthing (Worthing : Clements, ca. 1830), the tomb being that of John Oliver; numerous plates depict the latest English and French fashions, military uniforms, ethnic costumes and English tradesmen; small engravings are of English cottages, castles, city dwellings, country houses, and country and seaside views; a series of humorous caricatures depicting nautical terms; a colored lithograph, Le Blouet, a waltz, by "Flora;" a tree depicting the profiles of European leaders of the Napoleonic era, La Plante sensitive. There are 3 engravings of scenes from Shakespeare. Prints depicting cats at a whist party; mice playing musical instruments; horses; "A Handy Dandy;" lithograph portraits of Lord Byron and Sir Walter Scott by Delorieux (both 1824), of Canova by Grévedon (1826); and plates depicting The Tax receiver and The Tax payer by Alken.
