McLaughlin was a well-known architect in Cincinnati, designing many notable buildings, including the art museum in Eden Park, the Lane Seminary buildings, and many private homes and commercial buildings. A partial list of buildings he designed is included. Mounted original drawings and plans by McLaughlin include the deer house at the Cincinnati Zoo, the Avondale Branch of the library, the Museum of Natural History, and many of the Cincinnati Art Museum. Some prints from books are also included. Portraits include a chalk manner lithograph from 1859, a photograph of McLaughlin, his wife, and three employees in his office, two group portraits with members of the American Institute of Architects, and a photograph at age 89, taken shortly before his death.
