註釋This book focuses upon the evolution of nationalist politics in the village and hinterland of Inniskeen, County Monaghan from the third Home Rule crisis to the end of the Great War. In 1914, nationalism was particularly vibrant in this part of South Monaghan and the Irish Parliamentary Party, having secured the passage of the third Home Rule Bill, was at the peak of its popularity. Local nationalist leaders such as Bernard O'Rourke, a very successful 44-year-old businessman, looked forward to participating in a constitutional form of Home Rule within the British Empire. However, by the end of the war, O'Rourke's political outlook had been transformed. This study illustrates how the impact of the suspension of Home Rule, disillusionment with the Irish party, the threat of partition, the 1916 Rising and the spread of separatist ideals converted O'Rourke from an ardent Irish party supporter to a Sinn Féiner, who was to become the most successful organizer of the Dáil loan in Ulster in 1920.
