註釋The author also wrote Origins of the Second World War and Essays in English History. These letters to Eva, whom he met in Hungary whilst still married to his second wife, give insight into the man. He and Eva eventually married in 1978, but had corresponded previously for ten years. The letters ended in 1983, after which they did not part. These letters reflect his thoughts and values and also the culture and priorities of an English radical in the latter half of the 20th century.
