Projections (based on 1996 census figures) suggest that the Indigenous population of working age will increase by almost 30 per cent by the year 2006; if growth in mainstream employment for Indigenous people remains the same as for the population as a whole (at 1.3 per cent per annum), then it is predicted that the unemployment rate will increase from 41 per cent of the labour force to 48 per cent by the year 2006 (not including CDEP scheme work); CDEP workers are included in the official record of employment and unemployment; the official growth rate of Indigenous employment in the 1990s is 3 per cent; projections show that the official unemployment rate for Indigenous people will rising from 26 per cent (in 1996) to 28 per cent in 2006; discusses policy implications.
