註釋In 1764, 15 year-old Polly Moore runs her ne'er-do-well father's tavern in Brunswick, on the Cape Fear River in the North Carolina colony, whilealso overseeing her two younger sisters and her family's slaves and servants, since her pregnant mother refuses to get out of bed. The Anchor is the center of village activity, and Polly witnesses and hears about pre-Revolution events and begins to form her own opinions about slavery, freedom and the treatment of women.
