Establishing New Norms
註釋Immerse yourself in a transformative learning experience with 'Establishing New Norms: The Science Educator's Guide to Inclusivity, Transparency, and Community,' an interactive workbook from our groundbreaking webinar. This resource embraces a unique triad approach focusing on subverting exclusive, elusive, and exploitative norms in academia by promoting a culture of inclusivity, transparency, and community. In academia, certain norms tend to exclude and exploit certain groups of people. These exclusive norms are often elusive, making them difficult to identify and address. For example, the expectation that academics work long hours and sacrifice their personal lives can exclude those with caregiving responsibilities or other obligations outside of work. Similarly, the pressure to constantly produce new research can exploit graduate students and early-career academics who may fear that speaking out against unfair treatment could harm their chances of success. In contrast, inclusivity, transparency, and community can create a more welcoming and supportive academic environment. Inclusivity means actively seeking out and valuing diverse perspectives and experiences. This could look like creating mentorship programs for underrepresented groups or ensuring that hiring committees are diverse. Transparency means being open and honest about academic processes and decisions. This could involve making tenure criteria clear and accessible to everyone or providing feedback to graduate students on their progress. Community means fostering a sense of belonging and connection among academics. This could involve hosting regular social events or creating opportunities for collaboration and interdisciplinary work.As a science educator, this workbook is a tangible guide towards reform, addressing common frustrations and challenges experienced in academic environments.
