The Kernan family comes from the Mac Tighearnains of Ireland. The Mac Kernans, as they were also known, split off from the ÓRourkes in about the sixth century. Bryan Kernan (d. 1766) of Ned, County Cavan, Ireland descended from the early Mac Kernans. He was the father of five children. Descendants live in Ireland and the United States.
