The Islamic Government's Policy on Women's Access to Higher Education and Its Impact on the Socio-economic Status of Women
註釋Higher education has provided women in the developing countries with the opportunity to enter the male-dominated market of higher skilled manpower. Before the Islamic regime of Iran came to power in 1979, women had access to all fields of study except mining. As a result of "Islamization, " however, 54 percent of the majors offered by 123 institutions of higher education (91 out of 169) were closed to female applicants by 1985. The affected areas include agriculture, engineering, medicine, law, and some fields in the Humanities. The paper demonstrates that women should be restored to the task of "motherhood, " that is, confined to domestic work. The impact of this policy on the social and economic position of women in Iran is discussed.
