With new and forthcoming regulatory requirements regarding advanced water treatment, membrane processes have a broad range of applicability. Pretreatment processes combined with conventional nanofiltration or reverse osmosis are called integrated membrane systems (IMSs). This report covers 3 major pretreatments that were tested on pilot-plant scale in comparison to a conventional membrane system for anaerobic groundwater, in the US and the Netherlands. In addition to system productivity and fouling assessment, the research focused on disinfection assessment, DBP-precursor removal and SOC removal.
