註釋 This dissertation enters a landscape of contrasting opinions among Myanmar Baptist scholars, evangelists, and pastoral leaders. Do we hail the ABM missionaries as heroes for their work among the Burmese and follow the trail they blazed, or offer critical analysis and forge a new path in current mission endeavors? Do we proclaim the same gospel message to Burmese that the missionaries communicated, or construct a new gospel message which relates more closely to the Burmese perception of spiritual matters? Or does the historic Burmese rejection of the gospel excuse current minority ethnic Myanmar Christians from this task of evangelizing their Burmese "enemies" who have persecuted them over the past century? The list of contrasting opinions goes on. Through a careful examination of the ABM's historic work among Burmese Buddhists, this dissertation uncovers new background elements that previous dissertations overlooked in their collective analyses. This dissertation asserts that these overlooked elements not only provide a more complete explanation of why the Burmese have continued to reject the gospel, but also explain why the limited number of Burmese Buddhists who have converted to Christianity have overcome the seemingly insurmountable list of internal religious barriers.
