Designed as a fast level bomber and dive-bomber, the twin-engined Ju 88 was a mainstay of theLuftwaffe during the early and middle years of World War II. Disappointing in its first big confrontation - the Battle of Britain - the aircraft came into its own later in other theatres and in other roles, particularly that of nightfighter.
