註釋Reports on the first phase of a project designed to explore how urban areas of Canada might cope with the disappearance of the personal automobile in the early part of the 21st century. The first phase is mainly concerned with the land use and transportation aspects of the cities without cars scenario in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD). The main task of this phase was to develop principles, guidelines, and strategies for the reconfiguration of the regions so that comfort, convenience, and efficiency can be sustained in the absence of personal automobiles. The first part of this report contains background material on the automobile, its advantages and drawbacks, reasons for concern, possibilities for action, and an account of the evolution of the Cities Without Cars project. It also considers some technological advances in transportation, provides background on the GTA and GVRD, and compares procedures and findings from the individual GTA and GVRD studies presented in the second and third parts.
