The Effect of the Wings of Single Engine Airplanes on Propulsive Efficiency as Shown by Full Scale Wind Tunnel Tests
註釋An investigation was conducted in the Propeller Research Tunnel of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics at Langley Field, Virginia, to determine the effect of the wings on propulsive efficiency. An open cockpit single engine fuselage was tested with and without biplane wings and a closed cabin fuselage with varying amounts of cowling was tested with and without a monoplane wing. A standard metal propeller and "Whirlwing" engine were used. The wings are shown to cause a reduction of from 1 to 3 percent in propulsive efficiency, which is about the same for the monoplane as for the biplane wings.
