Content consists chiefly of routine details of daily life (prices of goods, wages, Chase's daily activities, health and family matters, the mails, religion), with some discussion of recent elections and politics. Overall, although these letters do not provide new information about life in California at the time, they do provide considerable insight into the author's education and attitudes and are written in an unusually literate style for the period.
