Findings from this study support the observation that rates of diabetes and associated comorbidities are higher in Aboriginal populations compared to the general population. Findings also suggest that a modified National Diabetes Surveillance System (NDSS) diabetes case definition may be necessary, and a useful surveillance tool, in areas that are not regularly serviced by fee-for-service physicians.
