A geologist and mineralogist, Ulrich was born at Zellerfeld, Upper Harz, Germany; migrated to Melbourne in 1853 on the Wilhelmsburg; became field geologist and surveyor to the Geological Surveyor, during which time he prepared plans and reports on the goldfields. He later moved to New Zealand where contributed much to New Zealand geology and minerology.
